Tree Felling in Peterborough and Surrounding Areas
Removing a tree is a decision that needs a clear reason and a suitable method. A tree may be in serious decline, conflict with an approved development or present a risk that cannot reasonably be managed through pruning. AS Arboriculture Ltd assesses tree removal from its Market Deeping base near Peterborough, explaining access requirements, surrounding hazards and what the work will leave behind. Where retention remains a practical option, that can be discussed before removal is chosen.
Led by arborist Alex Smiley, our business works across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, with nationwide availability for commercial projects. Equipment for this work can include chippers, timber cranes, excavators, telehandlers with grabs and stump grinders, although the site determines which equipment is appropriate. We offer free site visits, RAMS and £5m public liability insurance. Dangerous trees need a measured response: we assess the circumstances rather than treating every damaged tree as a straightforward felling job.

Straight felling where space allows
Straight felling may be suitable when there is sufficient unobstructed space to bring the tree down in one piece. The assessment considers the tree's condition, lean, crown, surrounding ground and anything within the potential fall area. Space alone does not make a fell safe: decay, wind exposure and access limitations can change the approach. We establish a controlled work area and plan how the timber will be processed afterwards, so the removal method and clean-up arrangements work together.
- ✓Assessment of the intended fall area
- ✓Consideration of lean and structural condition
- ✓Controlled access during cutting operations
- ✓Planned processing of felled timber
Sectional dismantling in restricted spaces
Where buildings, fences, roads or retained planting prevent a whole-tree fell, the tree may need to be dismantled in sections. The method depends on its structure, condition and the available working space. Branches and stem sections may require controlled handling rather than being allowed to fall freely. We explain the access and exclusion requirements before work begins, including any arrangements needed on neighbouring land. A restricted site can take longer because safe handling, not speed, determines the sequence.
- ✓Removal planned around nearby property
- ✓Section-by-section working where appropriate
- ✓Protection of agreed retained features
- ✓Access requirements discussed before quotation
Dangerous trees and urgent situations
Storm damage, hanging branches and visible movement can create an urgent concern, but approaching the tree may increase the risk. Keep people clear and seek advice before attempting to move or cut damaged material. We provide a 24/7 emergency contact service and assess the safest practical response to the circumstances. If a tree affects overhead lines, a public road or another operational asset, the responsible authority or operator may need to act before any tree work can proceed.
- ✓Storm-damaged and unstable tree assessment
- ✓Priority given to safe exclusion areas
- ✓Coordination where public assets are affected
- ✓24/7 emergency contact availability
Permissions, timber and the remaining stump
Before removal, relevant tree protections and planning conditions must be checked. A Tree Preservation Order or conservation-area location can affect the consent or notice required, and wildlife constraints remain relevant too. Our quotation sets out how branches and timber will be handled and whether the stump is being left, cut low or separately ground out. Stump grinding is not automatic with felling. Discuss future landscaping or construction plans early so that the proposed finish suits what you intend to do next.
- ✓Checks for tree protection and restrictions
- ✓Agreed timber and chip handling
- ✓Separate options for stump grinding
- ✓Clear expectations for the finished area
Tree Felling FAQs
We assess the tree's condition, its surroundings and the space available for a controlled operation. Straight felling requires a suitable clear area and a tree that can be managed safely by that method. Where obstacles or condition make that unsuitable, sectional dismantling or another planned approach may be necessary. The recommended method is based on the site rather than simply the tree's height.
