Hedge & Conifer Removal

A hedge that no longer suits its position can take up valuable space or obstruct a planned fence line. Removal is a different decision from regular trimming: it changes screening, exposes boundaries and leaves roots or stumps that need consideration. AS Arboriculture assesses hedge and conifer removal around Peterborough, including mechanical removal and root extraction where appropriate. We also discuss replanting with native or ornamental species and coordination with fencing.

Tell us why the hedge is being removed and what will replace it. Ownership, access and wildlife matter before cutting, while a countryside hedgerow may require notice under the Hedgerows Regulations 1997. A garden hedge and a protected rural boundary should not be treated as legally interchangeable.

If you are changing the boundary before selling or letting a property, explain the required end condition and who will approve it. Photographs of both sides can expose access differences and hidden structures. Avoid arranging the replacement solely from the hedge's visible top, since the ground-level line may be irregular or obstructed.

Confirming ownership and the replacement boundary

Check deeds and discuss shared boundaries before arranging removal. A hedge can conceal an old fence, changes in ground level or structures belonging to a neighbour. Agree access to both sides if needed; a contractor's quotation does not give permission to enter adjoining property. Removing screening also changes privacy and exposure immediately, whereas replacement planting takes time to establish. We can consider a sequence that leaves practical access for roots and fence posts, avoiding installation of a new fence before the machinery required for removal has reached the line.

Taking out conifers and substantial hedge stems

Conifers may need individual tree-removal methods when tall stems stand close to buildings or roads. Mechanical hedge removal is assessed around space, terrain and the material being handled, not assumed possible everywhere. In a confined garden, controlled dismantling may be more appropriate than pulling entire stems. We discuss how vegetation will be removed and where an exclusion area is needed. Ivy, wire and old fencing entangled in the hedge can complicate handling; disclose what you know. Suitable timber and green waste are recycled where possible within the agreed removal arrangements.

Roots, extraction and stump grinding

The intended replacement determines how much below-ground work is useful. Root extraction can be appropriate in a defined scope, while stump grinding may suit remaining bases where full extraction would be impractical or unnecessarily disruptive. Neither option should be described as removal of every root throughout the garden. Buried utilities, drainage, neighbouring roots and limited machine access influence the proposal. Our stump grinding work is undertaken by NPTC-qualified operators. Tell us whether the cleared line needs to accept fence posts, planting or a lawn so the estimate describes an appropriate finish rather than an unspecified hole.

Countryside hedgerows and nesting checks

The Hedgerows Regulations 1997 can apply to certain countryside hedgerows, with a removal notice submitted to the local planning authority unless an exception applies. Domestic garden hedges are generally outside those regulations, but location and the adjoining land require checking. The official government guidance explains covered land and procedures. Tree protection can apply to individual trees within a hedge, and active bird nests remain protected separately. Do not cut first and investigate later. We can help with tree permission questions, while hedgerow notice requirements should be established with the relevant council.

Replanting or fencing after removal

A replacement can provide a different height, character or maintenance requirement from the original hedge. Native or ornamental species may be considered around soil, available space and the purpose of the boundary. Laurel, mixed planting and conifers respond differently to future cutting, so choose with ongoing care in mind. Fencing may be an alternative or a companion to planting, with ground preparation and installation quoted explicitly. For a hedge that remains healthy and useful, height reduction may avoid removal altogether. A free site visit lets us compare those options and provide a written estimate for the chosen scope.

Hedge Removal: questions

No. The regulations generally exclude hedges within or marking the boundary of a domestic garden, but countryside locations and land uses need checking. Consult the linked government guidance and planning authority rather than assume an exemption.
