How Much Does Tree Felling Cost?
Tree felling costs depend on the tree, its surroundings and the work needed to remove it safely. A tree standing in open ground presents a different task from a spreading crown above a conservatory. Comparing quotes therefore means comparing methods and inclusions, not simply the final figure.
AS Arboriculture offers free site visits and written estimates. An assessment allows the proposed approach, access arrangements and finishing requirements to be considered together, giving you a clearer understanding of what the quoted work covers before you decide.
If you plan to retain neighbouring trees, identify them during assessment and explain any later building or garden work. Their roots and canopy may constrain access and stacking areas. Keeping those objectives visible in the scope makes it easier to understand why two removal methods are being compared, rather than assume the surrounding ground is available without limits.
Height, crown spread and structural condition
Height influences how the tree can be approached, but crown spread and timber volume also matter. Broad limbs extending towards neighbouring buildings may need careful handling even where the tree is relatively short. Condition changes the planning too: decay, cracks, dead branches or storm damage can affect stability and suitable working methods. A visibly declining tree is not necessarily simpler to remove. The assessment needs to consider both the material being taken down and how reliably the remaining structure can support the proposed operation.
Access and space around the tree
Access affects getting people and equipment into position and moving timber out afterwards. Narrow side passages, steps, steep gardens and long carrying routes can add handling. Fragile paving, planted borders and limited space for stacking branches may require additional protection or a different sequence of work. Where there is enough unobstructed space, a tree may be suitable for straight felling. Where buildings, fences or neighbouring gardens restrict that space, sectional dismantling may be needed instead, with pieces removed progressively rather than bringing the whole tree down.
Rigging, cranes and elevated access
Branches above roofs or other vulnerable features may need controlled lowering with rigging rather than being allowed to fall. This introduces equipment, handling and coordination that should be reflected in the proposed method. Some sites may warrant consideration of a crane or a mobile elevating work platform, depending on the tree's condition and available access. Neither is automatically required for a large tree. Ask whether any specialist equipment or hire arrangements form part of the estimate, rather than assuming every removal uses the same approach.
Permissions and roadside arrangements
Before agreeing a start, establish whether the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area. Consent or notification requirements may affect what can proceed and when; the official government guidance linked below explains the framework. Roadside work can also require pedestrian protection, traffic management or coordination over access. Where relevant, discuss risk assessments and method statements, known as RAMS, and Chapter 8 roadside arrangements. Clarify who is responsible for permissions and whether associated administration or traffic measures are included.
Waste removal and the remaining stump
Removing a tree produces branches, logs and other arisings that must be accounted for. Taking everything away involves different handling from leaving suitable timber on site by agreement. Specify whether logs should be retained, where material may be stacked and what clearance is expected. Felling also leaves a stump unless further work is arranged. Stump grinding, removal of grindings, imported soil and reinstatement should not be assumed to form part of tree removal. Identify these separately so the estimate matches the finish you actually want.
Urgent work and changing site conditions
Emergency tree work can involve unstable timber, obstructed access or an immediate need to protect people and property. Those circumstances may change the crew, equipment and sequence required compared with a planned removal. Describe recent movement, storm damage and nearby hazards when requesting an assessment, without approaching an unsafe tree to investigate. If conditions change after the visit, let the contractor know. A written scope should distinguish the agreed removal from any additional making-safe work or follow-on clearance that might need separate consideration.
Compare the complete written scope
A useful estimate identifies the tree, proposed removal method, material disposal and any exclusions. Check arrangements for neighbouring access, surface protection and the final site condition. Ask to see appropriate insurance documentation when comparing contractors. Also check the waste carrier registration of anyone transporting waste rather than assuming it is covered. An unusually cheap quote deserves questions about omitted work, not an automatic rejection, particularly where stump treatment, traffic measures or waste handling are left unclear. An average cost of tree felling is not a reliable substitute for an assessed quotation: two apparently similar trees can require very different removal sequences.
Tree Felling Cost: questions
Photographs can help explain the location and visible obstacles, but they may not reveal decay, gradients or the full access route. A site visit allows those details to inform the written estimate.
It may alter disposal and handling requirements, but cutting and moving the timber still involves work. Agree the log size, stacking location and any remaining waste removal before comparing that option.
Do not assume that describing a tree as dangerous removes every requirement. Exceptions have specific conditions. Seek advice from the local planning authority and consult the official guidance before proceeding.
